Rome, the Eternal City and the capital of Italy, is a most impressive city with an abundance of great historic edifices and monuments, some over a thousand years old. If you choose a low cost short city break rather than a Rome holiday, you will have to prioritise your sightseeing, as there is so much to see and do. An organised tour of the city is recommended so that you can view the major attractions and then decide what you'd like to explore in greater depth.

Enjoy a Cheap City Break in Rome

Rome has a long history having been founded two and a half millennia ago around 700BC. The Capitol above the city has ancient temples dedicated to the gods. The Pantheon, from 25BC is a remarkable structure and is a temple to all the gods from the time of Imperial Rome. If you like to visit churches you are spoilt for choice. Choose from the large basilicas of St. Peter, St. John Lateran and Santa Maria Maggiore or the more humble Santa Prassede from the ninth century and you won't be disappointed. You'll find the latter church close to Maria Maggiore. When you go into Santa Prassede, it's like entering a jewellery box as the byzantine mosaics sparkle like gems. As well as the churches you have the Colosseum that hosted the gladiatorial entertainment that was so enjoyed by Imperial Romans. If it's culture you want, there are museums and galleries galore.

Rome is considered a romantic city and it is certainly the place for couples. Wander hand in hand through the squares and cobbled streets at night, throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain and climb the Spanish Steps, stop a while for a glass of wine, a coffee or beer and just enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and the friendly people.

If you visit Rome in the height of summer you may want to take a trip to the coast at Ostia which is only twelve miles away. You'll find a good sandy beach and can cool off in the waters of the Mediterranean.

Although Rome is considered expensive, it is always possible to find low cost accommodation that provides both good quality and service. Restaurants, bistros, trattorie, pizzerias and bars cater for all tastes and pockets. There is everything from haute cuisine to fast foods. Those who enjoy shopping will find many designer boutiques as well as specialist shops and market stalls. Nightlife can be lively but never raucous. There are many romantic spots for couples.
