Salisbury

Salisbury is a medieval cathedral city that lies near the edge of Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. The UNESCO world Heritage Site of Stonehenge is located eight miles to the north west. The cathedral was begun in 1221 and completed within forty years. Its spire is almost four hundred feet tall and its clock, from 1386, is the oldest mechanical clock in the world. Salisbury lies in a beautiful area of British countryside.

Popular with tourists from home or abroad

Surrounded by verdant pastures and water meadows, the town, with its timbered buildings and Gothic Cathedral, is very popular with tourists from home and abroad. In the Chapter House of the cathedral, you'll find the Magna Carter Exhibition. It contains the best preserved of the four remaining copies.

If you enjoy historic houses, take time to visit Mompesson House, a wonderful Queen Anne townhouse; wander the rooms of Arundells, the home of Edward Heath, and enjoy its tranquil gardens; a short distance from the city is the Earl of Pembroke's Wilton House which claims to have one of the finest collections of art in Europe.

While in Salisbury, a trip to the famous prehistoric monument of Stonehenge is considered essential. The summer solstice is a particularly popular time to visit. Visitors can no longer touch the stones as they are roped off to prevent further corrosion. Salisbury has a number of very pleasant parks where you can relax and enjoy the view.
