Lake District

The Lake District is a National Park situated in the North West of England, in the county of Cumbria. It covers over 900 square miles and its diverse and dramatic landscape makes it a popular destination for holidaymakers from all over the world. 500 million years of geology have created an area of mountainous craggy peaks in the north and central areas, with more gentle valleys and lowlands in the south of the region.

Home to the highest mountain in England

The Lake District is home to the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike, at 978 metres high, and the deepest lake, Wastwater at 74 metres deep, making it ideal for sailing, fishing and diving. It is easy to see why this wild and romantic landscape has provided the inspiration for writers, poets and artists for centuries.

Every visit provides the opportunity for a new adventure with new places to explore and endless things to see and do.

With 26 miles of Atlantic coastline, the climate in the lake district is generally mild and wet, but very changeable. During the summer months, it is usual to experience ‘four seasons in a day’, but this is what makes the landscape what it is, and is part of the enduring charm of a visit to the Lakes. But the weather should never get in the way of the fun! There are walks suitable for all ages and abilities, from gentle riverside and woodland strolls, such as the walks around Derwentwater and Windermere with country pubs, inns and cafes along the way to the more challenging peaks of Helvellyn and Grisedale Pike. Although there are 16 bodies of water, Bassenthwaite is the only true lake in the area. Nevertheless, this provides plenty of opportunities for fun on the water including canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, or yachting.

As well as the endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, the Lake District has plenty on offer for those looking for a more relaxing pace. There are stately homes and gardens to explore; farms, zoos and animal sanctuaries to enjoy, charming villages and towns to discover, and plenty of pubs and restaurants where you can just sit back and enjoy some fine local fare.
