Nottingham

Nottingham has evolved from an ancient market town in the heart of the English East MIdlands, into a modern, bustling city, steeped in history, with award winning restaurants, fabulous shopping and a fine range of pubs, clubs, theatres and music venues. Modern Nottingham is a well designed city with a central marketplace and broad streets with modern glass buildings sitting easily alongside elegant Victorian and Georgian architecture.

The city has developed a reputation as a centre for culture and entertainment, making it an ideal destination for a short break, or as a base to explore the surrounding area. The city centre is compact and many streets around the Market Square are pedestrianised, which, together with a modern tram system, makes this a particularly accessible destination.

Centre for culture & entertainment

As a visitor to Nottingham you are immediately immersed in its rich and fascinating history. The medieval castle and walls dominate the approach to the centre and there are several quaint pubs and inns including Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, the oldest pub in England dating back to 1189 which is an essential item on any itinerary. Although the industries that helped to create the city are long gone, many of the buildings that housed the lacemakers, textile workers, tobacconists and engineers have been preserved and put to modern use around the city as hotels, museums, bars and music venues.

Nottingham is the ideal choice for a weekend city break. Many of the well known big name hotels are conveniently situated near the station and in the centre, but there are plenty of smaller, independent hotels and guest houses within easy access of the city and main attractions. Many of the big high street stores can be found in the modern Victoria and Broadmarsh Shopping Centres, but for something a bit different, the Flying Horse Walk, a Shopping Centre set in a Georgian Arcade, has a fine range of smaller independent shops and boutiques. There are regular markets in the city throughout the year, including the large covered market at the Victoria Centre and the magical Winter Wonderland and ice rink at the Market Square that runs through from the end of November to Christmas Eve.

A short break in Nottingham is a food lover’s delight and diners will be spoilt for choice with over 300 restaurants in and around the city centre. Many restaurants specialise in fresh locally sourced produce with regularly updated seasonal menus For a more global outlook, there are numerous Spanish, French, Italian and American restaurants, and not forgetting some of the best Indian restaurants in the UK, situated in Nottingham’s own Curry Quarter along Maid Marian Way.
